Story behind the song

Dave McMurray was part of the music team I played with for a number of years. Dave has an enormous music background and interest, so he and I got together to have a go at co-writing a song. “Meet with me” was the result.

The whole song is written as a prayer. The first verse alludes to New Testament and Old Testament texts:

For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

Ephesians 2:10 (NLT)

“You are like the clay in the potter’s hands, and I am the potter.”

Jeremiah 18:6 (ERV)

We also wanted to use the word ‘meet’ in its fullest form. Not just a casual rendezvous, but a deep experience of knowing, providing and loving, touching and joining, seeing face to face. In Exodus 19, we read that Moses meets with God on Mount Sinai. As we wrote the song, we considered times in the Bible and in history where people have a sense of meeting with God: they are never the same again; irrevocably changed. In Moses‘ case, his physical appearance seemed to shine so much with the radiance of God that he wore a veil when in public (Exodus 34).

God is often referred to as a rock in the Psalms – a symbol of faithfulness, protection and safety. This unchanging nature of God is referred to in Hebrews 6 as the ‘anchor for our soul’.

The final verse acknowledges that changing the world involves us: our prayers are rooted in the reality that we are part of the answer to our own prayers. What is ours to do? Where are we being called? How will we use the gifts at our disposal? We need God’s help to follow where God is leading us.
